Cup run ends... 2011-10-26 by shaken007

Our Cup run came to an end today after losing a hard fought match against a clearly stronger opposition in Union AC Mauer.
A valiant fought first half saw minimal chances for either side but Union being the aggressor for most of the first 45 mins. The defence was put to work from the get go, with no let up from Union. Our best chance of the first 45 mins came from a set piece just outside the 18 yard box, sadly coming to nothing. Some great saves from Keeper Phil the Pilot kept the Vi's in the race for much of the first half. Holding the Oberliga team at 1-0 till shortly before half-time, giving us reason optimism. Sadly Union got their 2nd shortly before the break, additionally VI's Striker Leo Thompson sustained a nasty cut on the head after clashing heads with a midfielder from Union. Bandaged up by our trusty Fritz, Leo battled on.
H-T 2-0 Union.
With a 2 goal deficit the VI's came out fighting Non-the-less. With 20 minutes of the 2nd half gone the game was more or less wrapped up for Union, however the VI's battled on in the hope of that one goal, they truly deserved, if not just for their hard work and persistence.
10 minutes before the end saw the best spell of the game for the VI's. With some excellent moves down both flanks creating good opportunities. 5 minutes before the end came our best chance with Joe O'Rourke launched himself onto the end of a cracking Alex Evans cross, heading goal bound. In the end a comfortable catch for the Union Keeper.
Sadly it was not to be, and the game ended with Union a clear winner at 5-0. A brave attempt to compete with a clearly higher level opponent.
We wish Union all the best in the next round of the Competition.
Lets not forget it was a truly great achievement (for any team from the DSG) to get as far as we did in this competition. Head high and bring on the next opponent Friday. (Südtirol 07)
A big thanks to all those who braved the wet and cold weather to support the mighty VI's!!
Great to see the support is there rain or shine!
